Dance To Raise Awareness

We danced like no one was watching. Some of us pranced around in circles, while others stepped to the beat. A few bobbed from one side of the group of forty to the other, smiling the whole while. Some clapped their gloved hands, some stood still, others closed their eyes and swooned to the music. We followed the song by Ms. Tena Clark, “Break The Chain”.

We danced for the One Billion Rising cause, a meaningful event that educates the masses about violence against women. It was a worldwide event and Campbell River was part of the extravaganza on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Spirit Square.

I’ve prepared a short movie for your viewing and listening pleasure.

Teaching Opportunity Extraordinaire

The theme of the 2013 Lunar New Year is one of prosperity and happiness. The mascot is a snake. On Tuesday, February 12, the Campbell River Immigrant Welcome Centre volunteers hosted a Lunar New Year extravaganza.

Events were conducted throughout the afternoon including an introduction to the Buddhist faith, questions and answers about Lunar New Year, a potluck dinner and entertainment.

Over one hundred and fifty people attended which gave Frank and I great opportunities to speak with some about the Baha’i Faith. The folks we spoke with recognized the common theme among faiths ~ obedience to God, love for one another, patience, humility and hope. It was a pleasure to be in such a purposeful environment.

Consider attending the function in 2014.

Been There. Done That.

There is a first time for everything. On this fresh February afternoon in the Wal*Mart parking lot in Campbell River, we witnessed a young woman and her male companion breaking into a vehicle.

“Oh, dear. May I take a photo?” I said.

The young couple turned to me and laughed heartily.

“Sure. We’ve been here for a while and are way past being embarrassed,” she said. “This is the first time this has ever happened to me.”

On the driver’s side of the car, the young man was forcing an unwrapped metal coat hanger down the inside of the window and twirling it to the left and then to the right in an attempt to grab the door latch. Meanwhile, the young woman was sliding a short, flat metal instrument pass the rubber of the door trying to reach the latch on the passenger side. I kept my Been there ~ Done That comments to myself.

“Do you have BCAA?” Frank said.

The look exchanged between the struggling couple told us no.

After a few minutes, Frank presented with a tire wrench.

“Frank’s going to smash the window!” I said.

We all laughed.

“I’m going to use it wedge the door open to make room for the hanger,” he said.

The young woman was texting for help and soon her brother arrived with a plastic wedge and a metal tool with a hook on both ends. Within a few minutes he had the car door open.

The young couple thanked us for our time and effort. We shook hands and told them it was our pleasure.
